Sleep School vs. Sleep Consultant: What's the Difference (And Which Is Right for You)?

If you've been Googling solutions for your child's sleep, chances are you've come across two main options: sleep school and sleep consultants. Both exist to help exhausted families, but they're quite different in how they work, and the right fit really depends on your family.

As a sleep consultant myself, I want to give you an honest, balanced look at both, so you can make the best decision for your little one.

What Is Sleep School?

Sleep schools (sometimes called residential parenting services) are programs where you and your baby stay in a facility, usually for 3–5 days, and receive support from a team of nurses and professionals. They're available through some hospitals and private centres, and can be a good option for families in crisis who need intensive, round-the-clock support.

Some things to know about sleep school:

  • You stay away from home, which can be disruptive to older siblings and your normal routine

  • The environment is clinical and unfamiliar, for both you and your baby

  • Wait times can be long, especially through the public system

  • The approach may not always align with your parenting philosophy

  • What works in the controlled environment of a facility can be harder to maintain at home

What Does a Sleep Consultant Do?

A sleep consultant works with you in your own home (or via phone/video), creating a personalised plan based on your child's age, temperament, and your family's needs and values.

Here's what that looks like with me:

  • We start with a full picture, your child's sleep history, feeding, routine, environment, and your goals

  • I create a plan that's tailored to your family, not a generic method

  • Everything is done in your home, in your baby's familiar environment

  • No cry-it-out, my approach is always gentle and attachment-focused

  • You have ongoing support throughout the process, not just for a few days

The Home Advantage

One of the most significant differences is where the work happens. Your home is your baby's safe space. Their cot, their room, their smells and sounds. Sleep learned in a familiar environment tends to stick, because it's built in the context where your baby actually sleeps every night.

When families leave sleep school and return home, the new sleep habits sometimes don't transfer as smoothly. The environment has changed, the support has gone, and the real-world chaos of life, siblings, noise, disrupted naps, comes rushing back.

With a home-based sleep consultant, we're solving the problem in real life. Together.

Attachment and Gentle Approaches

For many families, particularly those who are opposed to cry-it-out methods, a sleep consultant is a much better fit. I work within your comfort zone, with methods that feel right for you and keep your relationship with your child at the centre.

Sleep school programs vary widely in their approach. Some are very gentle; others may use techniques you're not comfortable with. It's worth asking lots of questions before committing.

So Which Is Right for You?

Sleep school might be right if you're in crisis and need intensive, in-person support from a medical team, particularly if there are health concerns alongside the sleep challenges.

A sleep consultant is likely a better fit if:

  • You want a personalised, one-on-one approach

  • You want to stay in your own home and keep your family's routine intact

  • Attachment and gentle methods are important to you

  • You have older siblings at home who would be disrupted by you going away

  • You want ongoing support, not just a few days of intensive help
